Britain’s Best Lakes For Watersports

STORY BY Patrick 20th July 2024

Staycation experts at Sally’s Cottages have conducted new research to reveal the best UK lakes for water sports activities.

The data was revealed by analysing 10 different factors in each location including the number of watersports facilities, TikTok posts, percentage of 5* Tripadvisor reviews, and the number of watersports-related terms (such as kayaking, wild swimming, paddleboarding, boating, and more) to give a total score that would determine the best locations.

Lake Windermere in Cumbria has been revealed as the best lake for a variety of water sports activites (5.25), followed by Rutland Water in the East Midlands (4.81) and Carsington Water in Derbyshire (4.57).

Ahead of the Paris Olympics, James Cole from British Triathlon says he believes the increase in popularity of watersports activities is partly due to their benefits on the mind and body.

“People can resonate with a lot of these activities because they’ve seen them in the Olympics or it’s something they’ve maybe done when they were smaller. With outdoor recreational activities having an almost immediate impact on your mood and mental health, activities based around open water are something people want to try. There’s also a social impact to it, you’ll meet people that have been doing it for not very long, likewise some people have been doing it for years, and they’ll all be happy to tell you their stories and connect with you to be part of something bigger.”

Wild swimming is also experiencing a surge in popularity.

“With the excitement of the upcoming Olympics fueling interest in various watersports, there’s never been a better time to dive into the refreshing waters of British lakes,” a spokesperson for Sally’s cottages said.
