A Whole Host of New Activities for Summer in Les 2 Alpes!

STORY BY Megan Hughes 16th April 2018

Les 2 Alpes summer season will start on Saturday 23 June, with the second edition of Les 2 Alpes Outdoor Festival.

Les 2 Alpes Outdoor Festival is a weekend of outdoor sports and leisure activities showcasing Les 2 Alpes in summer. It brings together high-level athletes, enthusiasts and sports lovers who are keen to discover mountain activities.

Try out all the latest activities or take part in fun competitions in an unparalleled setting. Seven disciplines take pride of place: MTB, trail, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, golf and paragliding, as well as alternative sports such as slacklining, waterlining, climbing or yoga. It’s a real celebration of summer in Les 2 Alpes and is sure to be a lot of fun.

However, this isn’t all there is to look forward to in Les 2 Alpes this summer. There are a whole host of new developments underway that are sure to maintain the area’s popularity as a summer destination. So what’s new?

Brand New Skate Park

Construction is planned for a new slopestyle skatepark culminating in a bowl (a permanent module recessed into the ground, located between the street and the ramp) in the resort centre at an altitude of 1,600 metres. Building work is set to begin this spring with around €100,000 being invested in the project.

Leap On An Airbag

The airbag park (airbag, drop bag) is offering a brand new activity: launch yourself into the air on a donut-style rubber ring from a launch ramp and land safely on an airbag (crash mat). Over 7s only, every afternoon, €3 per jump.

Try a Breakfast Paragliding Flight

There’s no better way of really letting yourself go than a paragliding flight accompanied by a qualified instructor. Clear your head, gaze over the mountaintops, see wildlife from the air… This summer, the AIR2ALPES paragliding school will be offering unique dawn flights including breakfast at the summit from just €70.

A Sunset E-Bike Ride

Free beginners sessions are organised every Tuesday by the Tourist Office and once a week, Bike Infinity/MCF is running new supervised rides including an aperitif with local produce at the Vallée Blanche summits (climb and descent between 1,600 and 2,100 metres). This costs €30.

Explorer’s Hike

Les 2 Alpes Tourist Office has put in place signposted explorers’ hikes in the mountains, suitable for families. Discover or rediscover the resort, answer questions along the way, and best of all, enjoy the local nature and wildlife, as well as the views from Les 2 Alpes’ viewing points.

Crystal Hunters’ Hike

This fun new hiking route is both educational and interactive (between 2,400 metres and 2,200 metres). Take the Le Diable chair lift, head to the Bellecombe sector and, using the 2 Alpes app, begin your hike… At the same time, visitors can enjoy the crystal hunter zone, a place for cutting out stones and crystals (hammers and other tools provided).

Little Elves Hikes

A new Via Ferrata area (run by the mountain guides’ office) is now available for children on Les Perrons sector (above Venosc village). This fun course combines hiking and climbing along a route safely secured by cables and rungs.

The Haute Route des Alpes

Les 2 Alpes will be hosting a stage of the Haute Route des Alpes cycling race from the 28th to the 29th August. It’s the second time the resort has done so, hosting a stage once before in 2015. The Haute Route cyclosportive event is one of the highest and most difficult in the world: 7 days of timed races, an overall ranking, 800km and 20 legendary mountain passes across the most popular cycling playgrounds in the world. This famous competition will be taking place from the 23rd to the 29th August, starting out from Nice and finishing in Geneva.

Hotel Chamois Lodge

Hotel le Chamois has new young owners who have transformed it in a beautiful contemporary hotel. Located in the centre of the resort, the Chamois Lodge has 20 bedrooms, a gastronomic restaurant and a cosy bar with a terrace.

While there’s a huge amount new this year, some of our favourite elements of summer in Les 2 Alpes remain – most notably the summer skiing! With the largest skiable glacier in Europe, between altitudes of 3,600 and 3,200 metres, you can still get your skis out here even when the grass is green and the flowers are blooming down in the valley… There are 100 hectares of runs available for beginners and pros, with soft snow and a good dose of fresh mountain air even at the height of summer!

Since autumn 2017, the glacier has been equipped with snow making machines. Deux Alpes Loisirs, the ski lift company, is committed to preserving the glacier and guarantee good skiing conditions in summer.
